Using eye-tracking technology to provide neurological insights and guide coaches in making safe return-to-play decisions

In 2025, participation in high school sports saw an all time high at 8.3 million students. But as sports grow, so do the risks. In 2017, 2.5 million high schoolers were reported to have experienced a concussion. Even more concerning, it is estimated 50-75% never even get reported.
Currently, the process of getting diagnosed with a concussion is subjective, fragmented, expensive, nontransparent, and disempowering. How can we improve this system?

The Rumble Rims device is a sideline assessment headset and software system that provides coaches with an objective measure for accurate and immediate concussion detection along with recovery recommendations.
When a concussion is suspected, the athlete can be immediately called out of play to take a 3 minute eye tracking test. The headset records their performance on 10 different clinically proven metrics that indicate the presence of even a minor concussion.
Once the test is complete, a comprehensive report is generated for the athlete, their coach, and their physician. The results are compiled into a single score that indicates the presence and severity of the concussion, which can help improve decisions about the player's recovery timeline.

FDA-approved eye tracking concussion diagnostic tools currently exist on the market, but a single device costs approximately $53,000 to purchase, making it inaccessible to most schools.

To ensure our device was afforadable, we custom designed and fabricated a modular system for under $300. The headset holds 2 IR cameras, and hot mirrors were used to keep these cameras out of the user's field of vision while still ensuring reliable pupil tracking.
